14 JANUARY 2015

Low album released 38 years ago today

“There’ll be others on the line filing past, who’ll whisper Low”

January 14 1977 saw the release of the first instalment of what came to be known as Bowie’s Berlin trilogy. That album was the Bowie/Visconti produced Low and it was followed later the same year by "Heroes" with the trilogy completed in 1979 by the arrival of Lodger.
Most of the music across the three albums wasn't even recorded in Berlin, the unifying factor actually being Bowie, Visconti and Eno.
Much has been written about the brilliance and braveness of the music on Low, and rightly so. It’s probably hard to imagine with the ears of today how absolutely unique the record sounded back in 1977.
Apart from the obvious slicing of the album into two distinct sides (reflected better in the original working title of New Music Night And Day), Visconti gifted Low that distinctive drum sound, among other things, via his latest gadget, the Evantide Harmonizer. The Eventide was a machine that Visconti described to Bowie and Eno in a conference call before the sessions, thus: “It fucks with the fabric of time.”
Though Low was a record purportedly informed by the likes of Kraftwerk and other German musicians of the time, it actually sounded far more organic and not at all mechanised.
This was in no small measure due to the nucleus of the band Bowie had favoured during this whole period (starting with Station To Station), of Carlos Alomar (guitar), Dennis Davis (drums) and George Murray (bass).
Despite a very mixed press reaction to Low, the album was a commercial success, peaking at #2 on the UK Albums Chart and number 11 on the US Billboard Pop Albums chart. "Sound and Vision" and "Be My Wife" were released as singles; the former reaching #3 on the UK Singles Chart.
More recently, the album was also voted #1 on Pitchfork.com’s "Top 100 Albums of the 1970s".
If you've not heard Low, go listen now on Spotify and prepare to be transported by its gloriously uplifting melancholia and majestic musical language from another time and place, that has yet to arrive.
Low sounds as fresh today as it ever did...thirty nine minutes of untouchable genius.

Oui, un beau coffret de cinq 78 tours !
Beaucoup plus sympa qu'un simple disque microsillon 33 tours ! Very Happy

Tu te moques de moi Very Happy

DAVID BOWIE: "Low" (RCA CPL 1-2030).
Bowie's fusion of a basic rock style with some gimmicks learned from the Roxy Music school of progressive rock has been hailed as a breakthrough for the rock avant garde, not least because his chief collaborator here is Brian Eno, the darling of the rock avant garde. The best track is the opening "Speed of Life," which is an instrumental transformation of the simplistic "Rebel Rebel" riff. But there are few real songs, and a good deal of Side Two is as limpid as the worst movie soundtrack. The first side rocks harder, but the drumming sounds like alley cats on oil drums. And as always with such a prince of poses as Bowie, one must wonder whether the motivation here is to bring the rock avant garde to a wider audience or simply to pick up another royalty advance from the record company.

DAVID BOWIE — Low (RCA) — Don't try to define Bowie, musically or otherwide. One minute he's a posturing clown and the next he's a tragic figure out of the "Mikado." His basic business is rock, but he sells it in strange ways. Like "Subterraneans" on this LP, Bowie's bag is mystery.

DAVID BOWIE Low by David Bowie on RCA Records. The best side of this single album is side B which has a remarkable cut entitled "Warszawa," a spacy rock tune without many words. That makes this tune a plus as David's voice leaves something to be desired on this otherwise top LP.
This LP also shows a progression of Bowie from the glitter rock stage to the space rock. He also shows a progression from slick rock through recent changes to his own futuristic music.
An extra tidbit for David Bowie fans is the fact that Bowie does many of the multiple music tracks himself with overdubs.

Bowie's "LOW" two albums
"LOW" BY DAVID BOWIE ON RCA.
The pop-master seems to have pulled his latest release from outer left field leaving Bowie fans in the wake of an avant-garde experiment in sound. Low is two albums in one. Side 1 is full of what we might expect from the cult-hero-turned-pop-star, soulful rock tunes with a bizarre flavor.
"Speed of Life" and "Sound and Vision" are the most characteristic tracks.
Side 2 is a sound-induced fantasy trip created by Bowie and ex Roxy Music synthesist Eno. The dynamic duo transcend established musical modes and deliver their unique experiment.

J'adore le jeu de Ronson (et celui de Earl Slick sur STS), mais les guitares de LOW sont dans le haut du panier, magnifiques!
