The man David Bowie trusted with his musical

His Arthur Miller stunned audiences and now he’s working with Bowie.
Dominic Maxwell meets hotshot director Ivo van Hove

.....After that, van Hove was riding high. So when, at 10am, he sat down, his idol since he first heard Young Americans in the mid 1970s, he felt oddly calm. It was only about 20 minutes in, as Bowie told him all about his musical Lazarus — based around Thomas Newton, the character Bowie played in The Man Who Fell to Earth — that he got the wobbles. That he started to realise the scale of it all, “Bowie's very intense,” says van Hove, “but he was very nice to me, he relaxed me by asking lots of questions. He knew a lot about my work and about me.”
.....Bowie and his cowriter, the Irish playwright Enda Walsh, wanted van Hove to direct their show. They still hadn’t shown him a script, though. Instead, when they met him for the second time, Bowie and Walsh read it to him, playing the parts between them. Whenever a moment came for one of the 18 Bowie songs to be sung — 14 of them rearranged oldies and two new ones at that point, although two other new ones have since been added — Bowie had them all lined up in order on his computer. They sat quietly and listened to them before resuming the reading...

Four new songs for Lazarus

To set the record straight (no pun intended) Spongebob is only using the track "No Control" from "Outside" for their theatre project. However David has written 4 new songs for his own theatre piece "Lazarus" which opens on December 7th, 2015.

How Cristin Milioti Met ‘Fargo’—And Left ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Behind

...She’s excited. Part of it is manic energy, buzz stemming from a mind-meld of a day rehearsing Lazarus, the upcoming musical adaptation of The Man Who Fell to Earth, staged by the New York Theatre Workshop and featuring original music from David Bowie, who starred in the 1976 Man Who Fell to Earth film. (Tickets to the show, which stars Milioti and Michael C. Hall, naturally sold out in hours.)

...Just last week, David Bowie himself popped by Lazarus rehearsals and the cast sang for him. Her co-star Michael Esper teased her that when he looked around the room during a quick break, everyone was on the verge of tears, overwhelmed by the honor. When he glanced at Milioti, she was picking her nails and checking her phone...

A Visit to the Strange, Secretive World of David Bowie’s ‘Lazarus’

By ALEXIS SOLOSKI NOV. 10, 2015

On a recent weekday morning, the Belgian director Ivo van Hove sat at a corner table in the bar of the Standard Hotel. A bound script of “Lazarus,” his latest stage project, nestled on the table beside his Americano.

With his planed features and silvering hair, Mr. van Hove is perfectly nice to look at. But it was almost impossible to eye anything except that script.

“Lazarus,” which begins performances on Wednesday, Nov. 18, and opens on Dec. 7, is one of the most anticipated works of the fall season and easily the most closely guarded. Few details have emerged, but the involvement of David Bowie, who has composed several original songs, revamped old ones and written the book with the Irish playwright Enda Walsh, guaranteed avid interest.

Mr. Bowie, who declined to comment for this article, conceived the show as a sort of sequel to “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” the 1963 Walter Tevis novel that inspired the 1976 Nicolas Roeg film, in which Mr. Bowie starred as Thomas Newton, a louche, orange-haired extraterrestrial. Here, Newton will be played by Michael C. Hall, late of “Dexter” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.”

10 NOVEMBER 2015

The New York Times visits Lazarus

“It’s not that I don’t trust you”

Great piece by Alexis Soloskinov in today’s New York Times, titled: A Visit to the Strange, Secretive World of David Bowie’s ‘Lazarus’.
An appropriate title considering the nature of T J Newton’s character. In fact, you may have noticed that today’s lyric quotation is actually a line of dialogue spoken by him in The Man Who Fell To Earth.
Soloskinov caught up with director Ivo van Hove during rehearsals and he managed to wheedle a few tantalising snippets out of him, such as this:

“Lazarus focuses on Newton as he remains on Earth, a man unable to die, his head soaked in cheap gin, and haunted by a past love. We follow Newton through the course of a few days where the arrival of another lost soul might set him free.”

The feature also points out that Lazarus has become the fastest-selling show that the Off Broadway New York Theatre Workshop has produced in its 36 years.
Lazarus begins preview performances a week tomorrow on Wednesday, November 18th, and it opens on December 7th.
Read the full New York Times piece here.
