27 JULY 2017

David Bowie Aylesbury Statue update

“Any day now…”

Hot on the heels of the 45th anniversary of Ziggy and The Spiders' Friars Aylesbury appearance on Saturday, July 15th, 1972, the show which received the Friars Heroes Award for THE GREATEST FRIARS GIG OF ALL TIME (http://smarturl.it/FriarsBestBNet), subscribers to the David Bowie Statue Kickstarter project (http://smarturl.it/BowieStatueCampaign) should have received their subscriber rewards by now.

There’s some wonderful bits and pieces in the package (contents vary depending on your level of subscription), not least of all Kris Needs’ superb The Thin White Book, filled with Kris’s wonderful recollections of the 1970s' Bowie phenomenon and the Aylesbury scene, of which he was a more than competent eye witness.

The book is also peppered with Friars-related Bowie memorabilia and press cuttings along with a handful of Michael Putland and Mick Rock’s photographs from the Friars’ shows.

Anyway, here’s an edited excerpt of the latest update, via David Stopps…

We're on schedule for September for the completion of the statue of David Bowie, but sadly the site won't be available to us until March 2018, as the developers have had to erect scaffolding under the arches. We therefore now expect the unveiling to take place in April 2018.

Sculptor Andrew Sinclair is working hard in his Devon studio. The two main figures are done and he is now working on the background montage and the album section.

Most of the Kickstarter rewards have been shipped so look out for a package shortly if you’ve not received yours yet. For those who pledged £250 or more, the full-size Friars Aylesbury Bowie posters will be going out separately. If you are due to receive a piece of the unveiling sheet or the book of the making of the statue these will obviously be going out at some point after the unveiling. Similarly, tickets for the unveiling party will be going out early in 2018 when a definite unveiling date is fixed.

We still have to raise an amount to fully fund the project so if you know anyone who would like to pledge for one of the existing rewards or make a donation please encourage them to do so. e-mail Sue for details: sue@fmlmusic.com

Once again huge thanks for your support for this exciting project. You are absolutely the best!
