Duncan recommends Bowie Book Club book #4

DUNCAN RECOMMENDS BOWIE BOOK CLUB BOOK #4

“Don’t be afraid of the boy in the moon...”

Following last month’s recommendation (Spike Milligan’s Puckoon), Duncan Jones has posted his fourth selection for the Bowie Book Club on Twitter. It’s Talking Time For The Moon Boy by Phil Fearloot.

Its going to be a busy month in the Jones household what with the new baby incoming! A shorter read, & NOT one from dads 100 list. Instead its one he had me read & I’ve wanted to go back to for a while, it may have influenced us both... Phil Fearloot’s - Talking Time For The Moon Boy.

Here’s the synopsis for Fearloot’s 49-year-old classic sci-fi novel.

Talking Time For The Moon Boy by Phil Fearloot (Originally published by Arrow in 1969)

Talking Time For The Moon Boy is set in the year 2016, when an excavation team from Earth commences an exploratory mining operation for precious metals on the moon. During the mission they unwittingly uncover a subterranean race of humanoid beings. These ‘people’ have clearly been taking an active interest in the ways of planet Earth and in a deal to abandon the mission, the humans return to Earth with one of the moon folk in tow. Moon Boy becomes a messiah-like figure on Earth with his various premonitions coming to pass. However, he is unwilling to share his darkest secret regarding the ultimate fate of Earth and soon his captors resort to desperate measures to obtain the information they want.

As Duncan mentioned, Talking Time For The Moon Boy is NOT in DAVID BOWIE'S TOP 100 BOOKS list: (http://smarturl.it/BowieBookClub100)

If you don’t do Twitter (where you can respond to Duncan directly), feel free to leave your thoughts about Moon Boy in the comments section.

FOOTNOTE: Have to admit it’s been a tricky book to track down, we grabbed the cover and the synopsis from an eBay listing. The seller seemed to have noticed the influence on a couple of Bowie lyrics. View the listing here: http://smarturl.it/eBayMoonBoyPB

Dommage que ce soit encore un bouquin super-rare à dénicher ! Cette histoire d'alien qui débarque sur terre en messie et en devient captif, ça me rappelle un truc... Wink

I still adopt the view that music itself carries its own message. That’s why I’m furious you didn’t get to hear the album because the lyrics taken on their own are nothing without the secondary sub-text of what the musical arrangement has to say.
