Bowie collector : Black Tie Black Noise

“They say 'Hey that's really something'...”

Back on April 5th we celebrated the 25th anniversary of David Bowie’s 22nd studio album, Black Tie White Noise (BTWN). There was a big promotional push in support of the album back in 1993 and many collectors’ items were thrown up as a result.

In a new regular feature on these pages we will be taking a look at some of the rarer Bowie items from across the years and BTWN is as good a place to start as any. Strap yourself in, this is a long ride.

Most releases by any artist are accompanied by promotional formats and limited editions in many shapes and sizes of varying collectability. We’re hoping to look beyond the more obvious items to focus on some of the things that may have escaped your notice. Having said that, we intend to balance that out in the coming weeks with advice on collecting for absolute beginners too.

A note of caution, this feature may get a bit trainsspottery (not an actual word) at times, and some of the items may be out of the reach of most collectors financially.

If you’ve read this far, you are probably aware of the obvious places to search out rare items, be they online or in the physical world.

One of the very best resources for the Bowie collector wanting to learn more, is the exhaustive and longest running site for Bowie collectors, the brilliant Dutch site: Illustrated db Discography. Run by Ruud Altenburg, contributors from around the globe help to populate the site with local variations, etc. If you don’t already know it check it out now, IdbD is your friend: http://smarturl.it/IdbD

As we say, poke around on IdbD for global variations of the myriad Bowie releases. This feature isn’t the place to list the kind of detail found there.

And so, on to BTWN.

~ Initial promotional copies of Black Tie White Noise were sent out with a signed 'With Compliments' card from David’s New York office. This would have been sent to favoured press and media outlets by the record company. For obvious reasons, David’s autograph is always collectable, but beware, the majority of the examples on eBay are forgeries. This is another area that we will be looking at. Hard to put a price on this one as items of this nature are really only worth the price that two bidders stop at. However, one sold very recently for $350 USD.

~ A two disc promotional version in the USA featured the following:
Disc 1: World Premiere Weekend Interview promotional disc for the album Black Tie White Noise. (For Promotion Only on disc)
Disc 2: The complete album Black Tie White Noise with front insert. (Not promo) Back insert and spines all say Savage Promo.
This package goes for an average of around $50 USD.

~ The CD and cassette version of Black Tie White Noise from South East Asia featured an Indonesian vocal of Don’t Let Me Down & Down ('Jangan Susahkan Hatiku'). The cassette isn't too hard to find and can be picked up cheaply. The stickered version is scarcer. Expect to pay around $30.

~ Finally, the European vinyl pressing of Black Tie White Noise had I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday erroneously credited to Morrissey alone. After the co-writer of the song, Mark Nevin, complained about his missing acknowledgement, a second version was issued with a Morrissey/Nevin credit. The original vinyl is hard enough to track down for a reasonable price anyway, and this corrected version will have been made in far smaller quantities. In fact, it’s so rare that that the otherwise very thorough IdbD doesn't even list it. This is the kind of item you’re more likely to stumble upon than see mentioned in a listing, because most people don't know about it. Considering the price of the original, expect to pay more than $200 to a dealer who knows what they have.

Check out a huge inventory of Black Tie White Noise releases here on Discogs: http://smarturl.it/DiscogsBTWN

The four items highlighted above are all pictured in our montage, but are just a tiny glimpse at the BTWN collectables out there. Feel free to highlight any related items you have in the comments section.
