DB and GAD discover Blow on Jools

“Lady Grinning Soul…”

Despite the headline, the camera can lie...well, PhotoShop can at least.

The album in our montage is called Blow and it’s by Donny McCaslin, who, as many of you will be aware, collaborated with David on ★.

Blow is out now: http://donnymccaslin.lnk.to/blowBO

Why have we shoehorned a picture of David Bowie and @gail.ann.dorsey (when they appeared on Later... with Jools Holland in 2002), into our montage, you may well ask?

Well, the location isn’t important, but Gail Ann Dorsey sings the beautiful closer on Blow, Eye Of The Beholder. If you like your Joan As Police Woman circa Real Life, you’ll love this delicious slice, IOHO.

If you’re not sure of the Bowie connection to Donny McCaslin, then frankly, you’ve not been paying attention.

Blow is an astonishing record full of twists and turns which you may have gathered for yourself via the superb single releases from Blow thus far. But don’t take our word for it. Here are some other folk in agreement with us...

"Taking cues from their former boss, McCaslin and his collaborators on Bowie’s final LP boldly embrace a vocal-driven sound" - Rolling Stone

"Exhilarating art-rock" - NPR All Songs Considered

"'Blow.' finds McCaslin blending his extensive jazz chops with a wide array of styles — alt-rock, hip-hop, prog-punk — while also adding vocalists...McCaslin [takes] his music down a “natural progression” that feels like entirely new territory." - Consequence of Sound

"Juxtaposes grungy art-rock with punk-jazz, electronica and hip-hop... [his] most radical offering yet." - MOJO

"Rich and unpredictable... one of the year's most surprising albums." - VICE NOISEY

Donny kicks of his European tour in support of Blow in London on Sunday. Go here for ticket info and the like: http://www.donnymccaslin.com/ Please make the effort to go if possible, it’s a remarkably powerful show.

We’ll leave you with this snippet from The New York Times, which included Blow in its pop and jazz fall preview:

“Three years after recording 'Blackstar,' David Bowie’s landmark final album, its musical director Donny McCaslin is still working with the quartet from that recording. It features the pianist and synthesizer daemon JASON LINDNER, the electric bassist Timothy Lefebvre Fan Page and the drummer Mark Guiliana, who craft a lush electric atmosphere around Mr. McCaslin’s muscly, arena-scale tenor saxophone. On 'Blow,' his new album, the band is joined by some special guests, like the experimental singer-songwriter Sun Kil Moon and the guitarist Ben Monder.”
