Where Are We Now? est une balade nostalgique dans Berlin.
Le début d'une nouvelle trilogie ?

WHERE ARE WE NOW?
David Bowie

Had to get the train
From Potsdamer Platz
You never knew that
That I could do that
Just walking the dead

Sitting in the Dschungel
On Nürnberger Straße
A man lost in time
Near KaDeWe
Just walking the dead

Where are we now?
Where are we now?
The moment you know
You know
You know

Twenty thousand people
Cross Böse Brücke
Fingers are crossed
Just in case
Walking the dead

Where are we now?
Where are we now?
The moment you know
You know
You know

As long as there's sun
As long as there's sun
As long as there's rain
As long as there's rain
As long as there's fire
As long as there's fire
As long as there's me
As long as there's you

Happy birthday David Bowie

Produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti, 'Where Are We Now?' was written by Bowie, and was recorded in New York. The single is accompanied by a haunting video directed by Tony Oursler which harks back to David's time in Berlin. He is seen looking in on footage of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time and a lyric constantly raising the question Where Are We Now?

"The moment you know, you know you know" resonates from the new single's lyric. Now we all know...David Bowie has been in the recording studio...just when we least expected it!!

On s'est bien fait avoir !

Bon, ça à l'air d'être du Bowie "traditionnel" si l'on en croit la tonalité de ce premier extrait, le choix de Visconti, la longueur des chansons. Mais franchement, moi, ça me va.

David Bowie releases first single in decade
David Bowie releases the single Where Are We Now?, his first new music for a decade, to coincide with his 66th birthday, and revealed details of a new album, The Next Day, which will follow in March.

By James Lachno
7:05AM GMT 08 Jan 2013

David Bowie this morning released his first music for a decade, posting a new song online and revealing details of a new album which will come out in March.

The British musician, who turned 66 today, made the song Where Are We Now? available on iTunes early this morning. A follow-up album will be called The Next Day.

Bowie, who is known for a string of Seventies and Eighties hits including Life on Mars and Heroes, broke years of silence and speculation about his forthcoming musical projects and health to release the single and announce the album via the internet.

A post published early this morning on the veteran rock singer's official Twitter account directed fans to his website, promising a "big surprise":

CHECK OUT WWW.DAVIDBOWIE.COM NOW! "Think we're in for a big surprise..." If you've not already stumbled upon it, you need to check out http://www.davidbowie.com/ for a very well kept secret right now. This really is turning out to be quite some birthday!

There, an excerpt from the video to the new song was available.

Where Are We Now? is the first new music from London-born Bowie – real name David Jones – since his 2003 album Reality. The singer, who had a well documented addiction to cocaine in the Seventies, suffered a heart attack in 2004, which curtailed a world tour.

His last live performance was in 2006, and he has rarely been seen in public since then, leading to rumours of possible ill-health - although these have been denied by his spokesman.

The singer turned down the opportunity to appear at the Olympics Opening Ceremony last year despite a personal plea by director Danny Boyle.

A spokesman said his 30th studio album, and first for 10 years, had appeared "as if out of nowhere".

''Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary.

''It goes without saying that he has sold out stadiums and broken ticket records throughout the world during this most influential of careers.''

He added that Bowie was the sort of artist who ''writes and performs what he wants when he wants''.

Produced by long term collaborator Tony Visconti, Where Are We Now? was written by Bowie, and was recorded in New York, where he was last believed to be living with his wife and daughter.

The single is accompanied by a video directed by Tony Oursler which alludes to the time Bowie spent living in Berlin in the late-Seventies, with his face projected onto the body of a puppet.

"He is seen looking in on footage of the auto repair shop beneath the apartment he lived in along with stark images of the city at the time," the spokesman added.

Reaction to Bowie's return on Twitter has been positive, with music fans from comedy star David Walliams to former Labour spin doctor Alastair Campbell all tweeting their support.

David Bowie's Where Are We Now? - first review
Neil McCormick delights in 'the most surprising, perfect and welcome comeback in rock history'.

By Neil McCormick
9:58AM GMT 08 Jan 2013

Lush, stately, beautifully strange, weaving resonant piano chords, decaying synths and echoing drums around a simple chord progression and a weary, tenderly understated, quietly defiant vocal, David Bowie’s elegiac new single may be the most surprising, perfect and welcome comeback in rock history.

Last year, when he was spotted carrying a packed lunch in flat cap, faded jeans and sweatshirt, the Daily Telegraph was reporting that Bowie had slipped into a quiet, comfortable retirement with his wife, Iman, and daughter, Alexandria, in New York. Even those who work closest with him in his UK office claimed to be surprised by his sudden reappearance. He regularly turns down all offers of work, rebuffing requests to headline the Olympic opening ceremony and denying reports that he was involved in curating an upcoming Bowie exhibition at the Victoria and Albert museum. All the while, it turns out he has been working away in the studio with producer (and New York neighbour) Tony Visconti, collaborator on 12 of Bowie’s classic albums, including The Man Who Sold The World, Scary Monsters and the Berlin triptych of Low, Heroes and The Lodger.

A still from the video of David Bowie's new single Where Are We Now (www.davidbowie.com)

It is to the slightly wonky retro-futuristic ambience of late 70s / early 80s rock electronica that Where Are We Now returns, evoking memories of Berlin not only in the mix of thick synth sound and dramatically poised vocal presence, but also in a lyric about “walking the dead” through the German city’s streets. Bowie describes himself as “a man lost in time” and the song resonates with qualities of melancholic memory, dripping with a sense of time and place and highly personal nostalgia, before building around rolling drums and swimming synths to a hopeful, if ambiguous, conclusion, in which Bowie sings “as long as there’s me, as long as there’s you.” It’s not a big, dramatic comeback and all the better for it. Rather it is a small, perfectly formed, poetic song, that doesn’t quite yield its mysteries and leaves you longing for more.

The way the track has just appeared in cyberspace, practically unannounced, with a strange video of Bowie as a conjoined puppet, demonstrates the 66-year-old pop visionary's nuanced understanding of the modern music business. There is nothing flash or trashy about this, not a hint of showbiz razzamatazz or old-fashioned bells and whistles, it’s a viral whisper, a ghost in the machine. Somehow in an overexposed digital twitter age when nobody seems to be able to keep a secret, Bowie has effected to reappear with dignity and mystery intact.

He has left us with a tantalising list of song titles for an album, The Next Day, which is promised in March: Dirty Boys, The Stars Are Out Tonight, Dancing Out In Space, You Will Set The World On Fire. I can hardly wait. Those of us concerned about the dismal creative state of modern music have been hoping for some young gun to emerge from their bedroom studio with something to take our breath away. Suddenly, it seems an old gun might have beaten them to it. Bowie has returned to the very frontline of popular music just when it needs him most.
